Learn About My DISC Project

This summer I participated in the second cohort of the DISC Program, Digital Innovative Skills Certificate, and I’ve learned a lot of valuable skills from this experience. The project specialized in project management, digital marketing, and e-commerce.

It came to my surprise how much I enjoyed using Shopify. It was new but challenging and it really reflected on my ability to problem solve and get around my limitations. When there was something I didn’t understand, I’d spend the time to work through it. There were days where I’d figure it out on my own and there were days that I would reach out for help. The days that I'd fix problems on my own were extremely rewarding. By the end of the project, I realized that learning how to build my own website was the best part of my program- but it wasn't the only lesson I learned in this experience.

I had a very diverse group with a wide range of talents. Together we built a Shopify website for our client Xclusive Elements and I am very proud of what the team has accomplished. My role was to collaborate with the team and manage the communication with the client. I have experience with client facing roles through my sales background, so it was fairly easy for me to maintain good communication and a strong relationship with the client.  Where this differed in my experience, however, was keeping my team communicating with each other so I could pass along the information to the client.

This was a little challenging at first as there was a lot going on, but it didn’t take long before I was up to date with every project and was able to explain things to the client in terms they would understand.

This is where my knowledge translation background came in. It can be challenging for clients sometimes to understand the back-end language of marketing and web design. These people have a business to run, and understanding the backend was not a top priority. I was able to make things as simple as possible for them to understand what we needed to complete the project in a respectful and professional manner.

Beyond the account management role, I flourished most in the operational sector of the project. One area that our client was hesitant about was their POS system. I took the lead role of researching options for their new Shopify site and helped them evaluate the best value for their needs.

Between keeping track of inventory and shipping, there were a lot of different directions they could have gone. I helped bring light to the most cost-efficient and competitive manner to handle their online business and we solved this issue together.

This experience has taught me a lot of things about myself and one of my best strengths in this program was thinking ahead for the client. I did go beyond my scope at times without realizing it was beyond what was expected.

I wanted to help Xclusive Elements grow and I believe I built a great relationship with the owners Craig and Jules and will continue to work with them even when the program is over because, in my eyes, they will forever be my client.
